Donating your eggs needs to be safe for you, and everyone involved wants it to be successful. The intended parents will have spent considerable time and money to get to this point, so it’s important that they are able to use healthy eggs with strong genetic material.
In order to achieve these goals, the American Surrogacy Center follows strict regulations that were set by the FDA, along with guidelines established by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Read on to see if you meet the criteria.
Your health is important. Since this is a medical procedure, doctors need to make sure your body can safely cope with it. It’s also important to the intended parents since they are hoping for a healthy baby as a result of the procedure.
Regulations have been set to improve the likelihood of success. Donors must be healthy women between the ages of 18 and 29. You must have regular menstrual cycles and not currently be on Depo-Provera, Norplant, or a Mirena IUD.
BMI is also important, and donors must have a BMI under 27. If that is a concern for you, you can learn how to reduce your BMI by reading our blog posts: Three Diet Suggestions For Surrogate Mothers and Best Pregnancy Workouts.
Your lifestyle matters, too. The things you do could impact the health of your eggs. If you have visited any country affected by the Zika virus within the past six months, you won’t be able to donate.
Any substance use is also prohibited. That includes smoking cigarettes.
Egg donation is a medical procedure, so egg donors must be willing to comply with everything that involves. You will undergo physical and psychological testing to make sure you are a suitable candidate.
Doctors will want to be sure your body can handle donating eggs and that you know everything involved in the process.
After the testing, you will need to take a series of injectable medications. This prepares your body for the donation.
Finally, you will undergo the egg retrieval procedure itself. You’ll need to be willing to undergo outpatient surgery.
